Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung and whole body disorder characterized by a progressive, persistent airflow obstruction. Most patients with COPD are lean, and often show decreased body weight. Typical metabolic changes associated with the development of cachexia are an increased release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as an overactivity of sympathetic nervous system which promote catabolic processes leading to skeletal muscle and fat mass wasting, such as stimulation of lipid utilization and skeletal muscle protein breakdown while decreasing energy intake and increasing energy expenditure. Nutritional needs are also altered in COPD, since the intake of the major nutritional materials, such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates do not lead to the same strain on the respiratory system.

MediDrink Pulmo is being designed to address these altered nutritional needs.

Clinical research of the past decade has shown that specific conditions require specific medical nutrition. According to these scientific findings and based on an approach focusing on patients and conditions we are currently working to identify the specific nutritional needs of many different illnesses in order to develop products which address these needs.
